Director Spike Lee is completing a documentary on the making of the late Michael Jackson's Bad album. The doc will provide a behind the scenes and very personal view of the creation of Jackson's 1987 album, the follow up to the record breaking Thriller.
"We have footage in this documentary that no one's ever seen, stuff that Michael shot himself, behind-the-scenes stuff," Spike told The Hollywood Reporter. "We had complete access to the vaults of Michael Jackson. ... He wrote 60 demos for the Bad record. Only 11 made it. So we got to hear a lot of that stuff, too, so it was just a great experience."
The sure to be must see documentary doesn't have a release date yet, but plans to be part of a 25th anniversary celebration of the Bad album. Lee interviewed Jackson's fellows artists and peers like Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow to get a multifaceted look at the musician. Said Lee, "We really divided it into two things: Artists today who were influenced by Michael, and then people who worked side by side - musicians, songwriters, technicians, engineers, people at the label, who were all committed to Michael, to the follow-up to the biggest record of all time, which still is Thriller."
A special edition of Bad, which contained the hits "Smooth Criminal," "Man In The Mirror" and "The Way You Make Me Feel," is due out September 18th and will feature additional songs and a DVD.
Spike Lee is one busy guy. Besides completing MJ's documentary, he is also directing Mike Tyson's Broadway show and his latest film, Red Hook Summer, is due in NY theaters August 12th.
